This edition of The Blue Privilege – The Last Tattooed Māori Women is a carefully considered reproduction centered on the painted works of New Zealand artist Harry Sangl. The project required a precise balance between preservation and contemporary production constraints.

The original text was retained in full, including historical spellings and early conventions in written te reo Māori. These elements were treated as part of the document’s historical context and preserved without correction or reinterpretation.

Typography was reconstructed using a modern digital equivalent of Linotype Palatino. Subtle but important adjustments were made to spacing, kerning, and line breaks to closely match the rhythm, justification, and page structure of the original phototypeset layout.

All imagery was treated as fixed reference material, with careful attention to colour fidelity and proportional accuracy. Where original production methods could not be replicated, contemporary production solutions were adopted to preserve the integrity of the work while ensuring feasibility.

The result is a disciplined contemporary reproduction that maintains the character, intent, and material presence of the original publication while translating it into a durable modern form.

“Being involved in recreating this was a genuine privilege for me. The brief was simple in principle, perhaps less so in practice – to produce a contemporary edition that remained faithful to the original in both spirit and detail.” - Stephen Canning, Designer.
